Porcelain Dental Crowns

Once the structure of a tooth is compromised, it may not be able to function properly. The tooth may fracture further and be difficult to clean, and the bite forces may be unevenly distributed through the mouth, which leads to excessive wear on other teeth.

Our Thousand Oaks dental crowns expert may recommend porcelain crowns to restore teeth that have suffered from severe decay or damage.

Porcelain crowns are tooth-shaped caps that fit over the entire crown, or visible portion of the tooth. They can be used to protect the tooth from further damage, restore the tooth’s function and create an aesthetically appealing restoration that looks just like a natural tooth. Our Thousand Oaks porcelain crowns expert may recommend a root canal treatment if the inner structure of the tooth is damaged or infected in order to preserve whole-mouth health.

Porcelain Dental Crowns

If our expert dentist recommends dental crowns for you, you may need two to three appointments for placement. At your first appointment, the tooth will be examined and a treatment plan will be developed. If a root canal is needed, it may be scheduled separately, and the tooth will then be shaped in preparation for the crown. Dental impressions will be used to create the new porcelain crown, and a temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth.

Once your new crown is ready our dentist will check the fit and then cement it to your tooth using a special light to activate the bonding material. You will be able to use your crown immediately, but you may need to consider using a mouth guard if you grind your teeth. Tooth grinding can be extremely damaging to both your natural teeth and your restorations.

Good dental hygiene can help keep your teeth and the crown intact. Brush two times a day, floss every day and schedule a professional cleaning and exam at least twice a year.
