How to Save a Knocked-Out Tooth

how to save a knocked-out toothAn avulsed or knocked-out tooth is considered a dental emergency. However, with prompt action and emergency dental treatment, a knocked-out tooth can often be saved. If you or someone you love has knocked out a tooth, here is what you need to know.

1. Avoid the root. Pick the tooth up by the crown, or the part that extends above the gum line, to reduce the risk of damaging the root.

2. Clean gently. If the tooth has dirt, grit, or other debris on it, rinse it with water. Do not use toothpaste, soap, or chemicals, and do not scrub, brush, wrap, or dry it.

3. Replace the tooth. If at all possible, gently reinsert the tooth into its socket. Hold the tooth in place by gently biting down, or use your fingers to stabilize it. If the tooth does not easily go back into place, do not force it in but instead protect it until you can get to the dentist.

4. Keep it moist. An emergency tooth preservation kit may be the best option but may not always be available. A glass of milk can be a good alternative, or you can slip the tooth between your cheek and your gums. Do not store the tooth in water since this can damage the root.

5. Seek emergency dental care immediately. Earlier treatment can improve outcomes. However, we may even be able to save teeth that have been outside an hour or longer.
